Clove comes from the flowers of Syzygium aromaticum, a widely cultivated tree in Indonesia. Red when harvested, it turns brown after drying. The clove owes its name to its characteristic shape. This spice is particularly known for its antiseptic and anesthetic properties. Chewing cloves would help calm a toothache.

In an onion, cloves are a must in stew or cabbage soup. Once ground, they are used to make Indian curry, which is flavored to perfection.
Ground, cloves are combined with cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, star anise and ginger in the gingerbread spice blend.
