Psyllium seeds, which are black, brown or blond depending on the species, are tiny (1,000 seeds weigh less than 2 g), hence their name, which comes from the Greek word psyllia, meaning flea.
Psyllium, black or blond, owes its medicinal properties to the mucilage it contains. (Mucilage is a plant substance that swells on contact with water to form a viscous liquid). These small seeds are used for their benefits on the digestive system, hemorrhoids, cholesterol and diabetes.
Our advice: it is best to rehydrate them before use, in water, tea, infusion or juice. To do this, soak the seeds for at least 20 minutes. The seeds will then be softer, as they will not absorb liquid from your body, as psyllium seeds absorb up to 10 times their volume in water.
You can also eat them as is – they’ll be crunchy, kind of like poppy seeds, or sprinkle some seeds on all your salads and raw vegetables. You can also grind them into a powder and use them in your recipes, to thicken a sauce, broth, soup or chowder for example.

Finally, the easiest way to take psyllium is to mix it in a large glass of water or other beverage and drink it.
